The Refuge NYE… As Manchester turns to welcome in the new year, The Refuge will host their infamous New Year’s Eve spectacular, alongside special guests of the city’s longest running nightclubbing institution – Funkedemia.
Following the success of last year’s New Year’s Eve, Funkademia and other local talents will provide the soundtrack for the final shimmy of 2018 and disco into the dawn of 2019. The Refuge NYE promises to be a hot ticket this year, as the countdown to 2019 is set be hosted by a selection of the UK’s best-loved DJs.
With sell-out shows week in and week out in Manchester, it’s no wonder that Funkademia have grown loyal party goers within the city as they are now entering their 23rd year of running the club night. Every Saturday, Funkademia’s collective of DJ’s brings five hours of pure and unadulterated disco, soul, funk and hip-hop. Classic tracks from the likes of Chic, Grandmaster Flash, D-train and The Mary Jane Girls to keep us dancing ‘all night long’. Songs like ‘Somebody Else’s Guy’, ‘Maybe So, Maybe No’ by Mayer Hawthorne, and some serious old-school hip hop from Jurassic 5 keep the crowds singing along.
At The Refuge NYE, “Love Is The Message” in The Public Bar will be a full Funkademia takeover, featuring residents David Dunne & Keith Griffiths – providing a funk-soul-disco-classics in a house party style on from 8pm until 3am!
Meanwhile, “Move Ya Body” is set to take place down in The Basement, bringing a none-stop exotic discotheque, complete with a genre jumping soundtrack courtesy of some specially selected Refuge residents & regulars. Featuring Refuge residents favourite DJ Paulette, Sprechen Music boss Chris Massey and Julie Wills from Disco Mums taking the party into the early hours of the morning.
New Year’s Eve at The Refuge wouldn’t be complete without all-around fabulousness and glitter from Cha Cha Boudoir and Carmina.
Funkademia’s Dave Payne said: “The Refuge is a beautiful, historic Manchester venue we’ve always loved – ironically we actually looked at The Refuge when we set Funkademia up 23 years ago – so it’s fantastic to actually play here at long last. We hooked up with The Unabombers for our 21st birthday celebration festival in Ibiza which worked really well, so it’s great to be partnering with them again to bring in the New Year. As an independent, Mancunian club night, we only really like to work with like-minded people… so this hook up seemed just perfect. We’ve done NYE parties for 22 years on the bounce now, and they are always ace, sell out events – so we expect this one to be no different!”
“Let’s Dance tickets” (entry to the public bar and basement only) are priced at £15 and available at –
