Menagerie opens its very own Tanqueray No.10 Outside Bar for summer
As we seem to have been granted the good fortune of a summer worth writing home about this year, we are continuously on the hunt for places to enjoy those late afternoon drops of sunshine as the days lazily draw to an end.
On Thursday 7th June, we headed to Menagerie garden party to experience the opening of their outside gin bar for this season, with the promise of a brand new collection of cocktails and exciting ways to experience Tanqueray No. 10.
We kicked things off with a couple of cocktails, juxtaposing the new and innovative with the modern classic in order to pay homage to the overall vibe of the venue. Showcased throughout the interior of the venue is lyrical décor from living legends like Beyoncé, as well as the Cirque Du Soleil vibe that Menagerie is famed for.
The Frenchie was a play on the French martini, with a contemporary twist of thyme infused gin which gave the mix an earthy base. The tartness of the cranberry, pineapple and grapefruit body was balanced by the notes of vanilla to follow. Garnished with a sprig of thyme, The Frenchie is a play on the senses with balance envied even by Menagerie’s in house acrobats.
Our next choice was the Pornstar Martini. We have said before that the Pornstar Martini is a risky order. Many bars have exploited its popularity without paying due attention to the complexity of the mix. Menagerie, however, took care to balance the pineapple and passionfruit so that the vodka was identifiable in its own right. Though this cocktail was a safe choice and certainly pleasant, we would still suggest that with a menu as extensive and innovative as Menagerie’s, you order from their impressive signature selection. This way, you stand more of a chance of experiencing something that is intrinsic to your chosen venue, and the likelihood is that you’ll discover your new favourite.
Menagerie sells itself as an experiential venue, and thus we were unsurprised but delighted by the intermittent spectacles put on by the Menagerie angels – from fire breathing to walking on impossible stilts, all the while showcasing their magnificent wings, you can most definitely expect the unexpected at Menagerie.
Next we opted to try out the Tanqueray No. 10 bar, which boasted an array of botanicals and infusions as well as variations of fever tree tonic which helped us to make our gins our own. From elderflower tonic and rosemary to aromatic tonic and pink grapefruit, the combinations proved to be unending; but always complimentary of the gin, rather than a bid to disguise it.
Ergo, if you’re lucky enough to clock off work during the golden hour, we can think of no better way to treat your senses than a gin infusion and an hour or so watching the shadows form on the side of new Salford’s glass palaces.
