Manchester has been ranked as one of the top six UK cities for vegans by research carried out by our favourite cruelty free brand to buy from in Manchester, The Body Shop.
As Manchester approaches the last week of Veganuary, we wanted to reflect on how the city has coped with the influx of this plant-based lifestyle change. 2019 is already set to be a big year for veganism. With almost half of the UK’s vegans making the change in the last 12 months, January has seen a record number of sign-ups already. Given our already well-established vegan and vegetarian restaurants, such as 1847 and the Northern Quarter’s Earth Cafe, we were pretty certain that Manchester would feature highly in the UK’s top cities for vegans – and we weren’t wrong.
One of our favourite cruelty free beauty brands, The Body Shop, has researched cities far and wide; exploring foodie spots, beauty trends and the most vocally vegan among us, to discover the top six UK destinations for vegans. Can you guess which we ranked highest for?
We just can’t stop talking about veganism. The Body Shop found that our fine city was full of positive things to say about veganism. Apparently, we were the most vocal and the most positive on social media, coming up top with the number of mentions featuring the hashtag #vegan.
But we’re not just all talk – we love buying vegan beauty products too. In 2018, the good people of Manchester purchased 171% more vegan products from The Body shop (per person) than the people of London, and 45% more than our neighbours in Sheffield.
While we’re on the vegan subject, we recently headed to Mamucium, one of Manchester’s newest dining destinations, to check out their innovative new vegan-friendly menu.
Meanwhile, our friends up North in Edinburgh came up top as the hungriest city for vegan cuisine. With 22 times more searches for ‘vegan restaurants’, the impressive growth has continued to spiral 97% since 2015.
The port city of Glasgow has shown a big love for vegan beauty products, which has seen a massive growth over the past few years, and revealed itself as the biggest spender on vegan beauty in the UK (followed closely by Manchester).
Well-known across the country for being the greenest city in the UK, Sheffield is well on its way to being crowned top vegan city. With over 800% more social media accounts talking about veganism vs November 2017, this huge increase illustrates just how quickly the vegan community is expanding.
Of course, no surprises for guessing our capital made the top six vegan cities in the UK. The Body Shop found that Google searches for the word ‘vegan’ have almost doubled compared to 2015.
Searches for ‘cruelty free beauty’ have also increased by 100%, showing Londoners are really starting to mean business in the fight against animal testing.
The pretty seaside city of Brighton has long been a vegan hotspot, but research shows that the city now offers the most events (per 100,000) people, plus an astounding 96 vegan friendly restaurants.
