A fabulous 60’s-themed Manchester Flower Show is set to flourish across King Street this summer.
A retro-themed flower show is coming to Manchester to celebrate the past, present and future of the city’s iconic retail and fashion heritage.
Expect to see a floral array of green takeovers (think installations, hanging baskets and seasonal produce showcases), as the event takes place on June 1st and 2nd.
Adorned with characteristic architecture and laden with history, King Street has claimed the status of Manchester’s most iconic shopping street since the 1880s. Today, you’ll find the stretch filled with much-loved Christmas stalls across the winter months, but this summer, the space is set to feature a glorious flower show, accompanied by a mix of live music, alfresco dining, craft ale and prosecco bars, as well as historical tours and VIP retail experiences.
A floral nirvana, Manchester Flower Show will pay homage to the original show which began in 1955 and returned to the city last year, after a 15-year silence. This year’s show will display the region’s floristry, produce and gardening talent, as well as a market of gardening products, outdoor accessories and, of course, flowers.
Festival organisers have appealed to both professional and amateur gardeners, florists and growers to get involved and make this year’s Manchester Flower Show extra special, turning King Street into a flowery haven over the June weekend.
Through the adventurous theme of ‘Flower Power’, organisers are looking for designs which explore colour, vibrancy and happiness. Inspired by the 1960s, the decade which gave us the power of love and peace, the theme is open to any interpretation.
Submissions can be entered into four categories: Pocket Garden, Green Takeover, Table Display and Bicycle. Entry is free and submissions can range from a small show garden to an inventive and unusual green concept which utilises urban space, such as lamp posts, balconies, telephone booths and shop windows, or a creative display with cut-flowers, fruit, veg etc. All entries will receive a coveted Manchester Flower Show rosette, and awards will go to ‘Best in Category’, before ‘Best in Show’ will be crowned in floral glory.
